After flowing past Chattanooga, the Tennessee River cuts through the eastern portion of the Cumberland Plateau for 26 miles before entering the Sequatchie Valley. The 27,000 acre Tennessee River Gorge is the forth largest river canyon east of the Mississippi, and the only large river canyon bordering a mid-size city. The gorge is host to many rare species of plants and animals, including the Mountain Scullcap, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles.
Founded in 1981, the Tennessee River Gorge Trust has worked tirelessly to protect this bio-diverse, scenic, and historic treasure. To date, the Trust has succeeded preserving over 16,000 acres of the gorge, through direct purchases, donations, and conservation easements. The Trust actively promotes educational, research, and sterwardship programs to help ensure the preservation of this unique natural landscape for the benefit of present and future generations.
